Screamfeeder
are a 3 piece noisy pop / indie rock band from Brisbane Australia. Lovers
of loud and beautiful music since the day they were each conceived, they
have been compared to all the greats; Husker Du, The Jam, GBV and The
Who.
Comparisons aside they rock in their own unique / sublime / chaotic way.
Contradictions and dualities abound within Screamfeeder, and therein lies
their beauty.
Screamfeeder have been around since 1991. We formed out of the
remains of Tim's old band The Madmen when he moved them
to Brisbane in 1990 and met Kellie. Soon enough she was in the band. We
remained the same until 1995 when drummer Dean Shwereb replaced Tony Blades.
In 2000 we have began playing with an extra live guitarist, first up was
Mike Squire, then Darek Mudge. As of late 2004 we are back to our "classic"
3 piece line up.
We live in Brisbane, Australia and have released 8 albums.
Here's the official guff on our latest two releases.
introducing: screamfeeder
(the official) press release August 2004
The Screamfeeder story is a long one but a simple one.
Three Brisbane kids start pumping out albums full of noisy infectious
rock in the early 90s and gain critical acclaim wherever they go. Twelve
years later and their accomplishments are many: recording with the country’s
top producers / regulars on the festival circuit / regular hi-rotation
on JJJ and Rage / overseas releases and touring / a dedicated and passionate
following in Australia and overseas / 7 albums, and a huge handful of
great singles… all finally together in the same place, on their
new album INTRODUCING: SCREAMFEEDER Singles & More 1992-2004.
A collection of all their hits & Triple J favourites such as DART,
STATIC, Hi Cs, TRIPLE HOOK, 12345, ABOVE THE DOVE, MR TUBA, STOPLESS &
BUNNY, as well as select tracks which have been successful in their own
right, including their awesome cover of Style Council’s WALLS COME
TUMBLING DOWN. It spans 12 years of consistent quality work for the band,
and with a great range of songs and styles will undoubtedly appeal to
fans and anyone who has heard any of these songs on the radio through
the years alike. Put simply, this is an essential album for any fan of
Australian Indie Rock/Pop and is a great introduction for those who up
until now may not have experienced in full the brilliance that is Screamfeeder.
screamfeeder take you apart
(the official) press release july 2003
So, Dean (Shwereb, our drummer) started listening to
all these old soul records where the drums are all tiny and panned hard
to one side, and the snare’s always on the “ONE!” beat,
the tambourine’s really loud and the guitars STAB! He was hooked,
and the “soul beat” was to become one of his favourites.
2002, we wrote a bunch of songs really quickly, all together
in the room, Kellie (Lloyd, bass and singing) would often play keyboards
just for inspiration and a quick melody, and we put the least amount of
chords possible over the top to complete the structure. Verses were repetitive
and almost monotone in nature, with choruses jumping out in directions
that we wanted, or, expected them to.. we’ve all been through the
songwriting fads and phases, having clever key changes and unexpected
twists and turns within songs, and this time we didn’t need any
of it.
Simplicity, and the soul beat, were the keys.
The next stage was to record it all quickly and spontaneously.
We called Magoo, he was down. We hit the studio in three separate sessions
and knocked down the tracks with minimal fuss. A couple of takes per song,
no editing, no tuning of vocals to make them sound “radio”.
We returned to our mixing 3 songs in a day mode of operation and got the
album finished in no time.
screamfeeder take you apart is the result. 12 songs that
we’re happy with, that represent the three individuals who make
up this band. Dean drives the songs along with the ever energetic soul
beat, Kellie keeps the bass and keyboards in check and provides some words
and vocals, and Tim (Steward, guitars and singing) does the stabbing guitars
and vocals. |
